F-gas Regulation
F gases are controlled by European Regulations (EC) No. 517/2014 on certain fluorinated greenhouse gases. This regulation aims to cut EU emissions of F-gases by two thirds by 2030 compared to levels in 2014.
The F-gas Regulation:
Controls emissions of F-gases by requiring leak checking, proper servicing and maintenance of F-gas equipment and recovery of F-gases at end of life.
Introduces bans on the use of F-gases where less harmful alternatives are available.
Limits the total amount of F-gases that can be sold in the EU through phased reductions in imports.
The main uses of fluorinated greenhouse gases are in stationary and mobile refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, fire protection, high voltage switch gear, semiconductor production as well as in foams, aerosols and metered dose inhalers.
Competent Authority
The Environmental Protection Agency is the competent authority for enforcing the laws controlling these gases. One of the enforcement powers designated to the EPA under the Irish Legislation is the power to inspect any company involved in handling ODS-F-gases.

Download a copy of the European Union (Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas) Regulations 2016 (S.I. No. 658 of 2016) - These Regulations provide for full and effective implementation in Ireland of Regulation (EU) No 517/2014 on fluorinated greenhouse gases and repealing Regulation (EC) No 842/2006. They effectively replace the previous Irish statutory instruments S.I. No. 279 of 2011 and S.I. No. 278 of 2011, which implemented the repealed Regulation (EC) No 842/2006.
