Gas and Heating Installer
Gas and heating installers must be registered with the Register of Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII).
The Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006 makes it illegal for any person who is not a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) to undertake gas works. It is also a legal requirement for all RGIs to issue a Declaration of Conformance (completion cert) for all gas work carried out. Individuals who carry out works and who are not registered will be subject to criminal proceedings.
Eligibility
To be eligible to join the Register you must show proof of training and qualifications. (level 6 advanced craft certificate in Gas Fitting, Electrical, Plumbing or Refrigeration or equivalent).
Trainees/apprentices must also register but applicants must show evidence of education/training achieved to date and must also be in a position to nominate a supervisor(s) who will take responsibility for supervising work and signing off completion certificates issued by the trainee.
Recognition of European Qualifications
Under the European Recognition of Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC), if you hold relevant professional qualification(s) from outside the Republic of Ireland, you must have them recognised before you can apply for scheme registration.
The Directive applies to eligible persons holding qualifications from – or recognised by – a European Economic Area (EEA) Member State. Due to the timelines set out in the Directive, applicants who meet the full requirements will be prioritised.

Application Timeline
The following are the expected timelines for to process an application:
- One month to acknowledge receipt of an application, and to notify the applicant of any missing documentation.
- Three months, with a possible one-month extension from receipt of complete file, to reach a decision on the application. The applicant may appeal the decision.
- Applicants can be required to take an aptitude test or to complete an adaptation period of up to three years.

- Passport Sized Photo
- Copy of Valid Insurance Certificate
- Copy of Level 6 Advanced Craft Certificate
- Copy of Gas Qualification Certificate(s)
- If you are applying as a Trainee – Copy of confirmation letter from Training body that you are registered apprentice (SOLAS)
Company Registration
The RGII Registration Scheme provides for individually registered gas installers to operate under company registration.

Temporary Registration
The RGII do not differentiate between temporary and permanent provision of services. If a service provider wishes to carry out Domestic Gas Works, then full registration with RGII is required.
