Medical Doctors

European Union citizens who are fully established to practise medicine in another European Union member state may practise medicine in Ireland on a temporary and occasional basis without having to take out registration. Doctors should apply at least one month in advance of planning to practise medicine in Ireland. In order to be eligible for this type of registration, applicants must provide satisfactory evidence of the following:

1. Doctors intending to provide temporary and occasional services must provide a completed declaration for each period of registration.
2. They are an EU citizen. This can be done by providing a notarised/attested copy of their current EU passport and a recent passport-size photograph, as proof of identity. This can be notarised by a Notary Public or attested by a Justice of the Peace/Commissioner for Oaths/Member of An Garda Síochána (documents signed by a Police Officer from another State are not acceptable).
3. They hold a recognised primary medical qualification and (where applicable) higher specialist qualification. This can be done by providing a notarised/attested copy of their primary medical degree and (where applicable) higher specialist qualification. Please note: If the applicant’s Certificate of Current Professional Status displays the applicant's primary medical qualification along with the full conferral date i.e. day, month and year, there will be no requirement to provide a copy of the primary medical qualification.
4. They are currently in good professional standing with all other regulatory/registration bodies with whom they have been registered within the past five years. The relevant body/ies must send a current Certificate of Current Professional Status (dated within the last three months) directly to the Medical Council's offices.
5. Current professional indemnity – Either from the indemnity provider OR from the hospital/clinical site where the services are being provided.

Application Process

To apply for visiting European Economic Area registration complete the declaration form for visiting EEA practitioners and enclose the relevant documents.
