Nurses and Midwives

If you trained as a nurse or midwife in the Republic of Ireland, you will already have met the requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) because you will have completed a nursing or midwifery programme which they approved.

NMBI approves both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that lead to registration in a division of the Register. In order to practice as a nurse or midwife, you must register with NMBI following successful completion of your nursing or midwifery programme.

For Undergraduates:

• NMBI must receive a completed application form for initial registration. This process will be done in conjunction with your Higher Education Institution (HEI) and linked health care facility.
• You must pay the initial registration fee, details of which are included in the Fees page.

Registration documents

Once registered, you will receive a registration pack containing your:

• Decision letter.
• Initial Registration Certificate.
• Annual Retention Certificate.

 For postgraduates

In order to register with NMBI, you must complete and submit a Postgraduate Registration Application form. You need to be logged into the site through the My Account section. 

Qualified outside Ireland - Applying for registration in one or more divisions of the Register

  To practise nursing or midwifery in Ireland, you will need to complete two processes:  

1) Recognition of qualifications – this involves the comparison of your qualifications with the Irish education standards and requirements.

2) Registration.  

Application Groups 

Applicants are classified into three groups (G1, G2 and G3). Each group has is requested to submit different documents and is assessed differently. Full details on the required documents and process is available here.

If you are not satisfied with your decision, you can lodge a complaint with the NMBI if you have been:

• Refused registration
• Given an adaptation and assessment decision/Aptitude Test 
• Failed your adaptation and assessment placement or failed full Aptitude Test

You must lodge your appeal within 56 days of receiving your decision. You need to complete an online form which you can access by logging into the My Account section

After you have lodged an appeal, your application will be reviewed by NMBI’s Registration Committee at its next meeting. The Registration Committee, which is made up of seven members of the NMBI Board, may decide to:

• Uphold the original decision
• Seek further information
• Issue a new decision
